Connections and Perspective
Most of my classes have taught me different things and I think that's the point. However in all of them, I learned something different about being in a work environment. The biggest thing with these classes is they all place different amount of stressor on you. For example a 2 credit hour class probably won't stress you out as much as a full load 4 credit hour class. These stressors taught me a lot about being in a fast moving versus a slow moving job. That's how I've looked at most of my classes now, they're jobs.
My biggest introduction to working with other's was working for Chick-Fil-a for 2 years. In that time I worked pretty much every position except for owner. I ran the dining room, I ran behind the counter, I even managed to become kitchen manager for a short time. We were in a popular intersection in town so there was never a slow part of the day. From open to close it was full gas.
The stark contrast to this would be my job with Chatham County Government. I was a junior software engineering intern and I came in and sat behind a desk where I worked on my project for the county. I ended up completing the project in half of the time that I was allowed because I would nose to the grind stone while I was there. What that allowed me to do was help my webmaster do quality assurance on the websites he was working. When it came to deployment time, we deployed Wayfinder I was featured in the paper and it also allowed me to somewhat "publish" my work. People started using my system in January of 2019 and they are still using it now.
How do I know? Who am I? How do I relate to others? Are the three questions that are posed in the "Intercultural Maturity" article and made me really sit down and think for a good amount of time. I know things because the world is just one big bank of information. Every single person carries information that is both similar and totally exclusive to them. There is something that someone else might know that I don't know but it could help me. The way that we learn and come to know things is through interacting with others and transferring knowledge between the parties. Who am I? Well in the global perspective I am just another source of information for others. I carry some information that will be transferred to someone else at some point thus increasing the amount of knowledge that is out there. I relate to others by things that we both like or dislike. "The enemy of my enemy is my friend" is the quote that comes to my mind. We can share common likes, common information or even classes. Regardless, there are many ways that I relate to others. It is often for a love of something (rocket league, computers, etc). Often these tidbits of information are shared between classmates or between the student and the professor. Most of the information that I have received while at school here has been between myself and the person teaching, whether that's student led or by a professor.
